Italian Meatloaf

Italian Meatloaf

Italian Meatloaf is a tender and flavorful meatloaf made from a combination of ground beef and Italian sausage. Cooked in a rich tomato sauce and covered with a thick layer of Fontina cheese. So delicious!

  • 2 large eggs
  • ¾ cup of whole milk
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • ½ cup of grated Parmesan
  • 1 teaspoon of kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon of fennel seeds
  • ½ small yellow onion, minced
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • ½ teaspoon of dried basil
  • 2 pounds of ground beef (85/15%)
  • 1 cup of Panko breadcrumbs
  • ½ teaspoon coarse black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
  • ¾ cup grated Mozzarella cheese
  • 1 jar (24 ounces) marinara sauce
  • 2 tablespoons torn fresh basil leaves
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley

First, preheat the oven to 400 ° F.

Then, in a large bowl, combine the ground beef, milk, breadcrumbs, Parmesan, eggs, onion, garlic, salt, pepper, fennel seeds, Italian seasoning, dried basil, red pepper flakes and parsley until well combined. Make sure you don't over mix otherwise you will end up with a dry meatloaf. Mix by hand until everything is distributed evenly.

Pour half of the marinara sauce into a 9x13 baking dish, spread it in an even layer. Shape the meat mixture into an oval bun and place it in the pot over the sauce. Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes.

Carefully remove from the oven, uncover and garnish the meatloaf with the rest of the marinara sauce. Top with mozzarella and return to oven, uncovered, for 15 minutes. Let cool slightly before garnishing with fresh basil, then slice and serve. Happy Cooking Time.
